Techno Line:After August 31, 2011, all analog televisions will require a converter box in order to receive Canadian over-the-air broadcasts using an antenna. At that time, all over-the-air broadcast signals in Canada will be in digital-only format. Canadians using satellite or cable services should see no change.
Look To The Future!Much like the world was transfixed on Y2K at the end of the last century, there is another date in Canada that is looming closer by the minute. On Aug 31, 2011, there will be no more analog signals coming through the airwaves. U.S. television stations broadcasting over-the-air into Canada will make this change sooner, in February 2009. This means that anybody that doesn’t have cable or satellite television will need a special converter box in order to continue to receive programming through an antenna. For the official government of Canada web page, click the link below:What isn’t clearly explained is that cable customers without a digital box will have to purchase one at that time, because the cable-company will also discontinue analog signals. The sentence on the Government of Canada website really should read: “Canadians using satellite or DIGITAL cable services should see no change." If you have analog cable, you will have to cough up $400.00 for a converter box. OUCH!Accordingly, this pending deadline serves to remind us that technology is always marching forward, bringing new innovations every day. For example, it’s hard to believe that mass market Internet has only been around for about fifteen years or so! The main point to take from all this, is that it’s important to keep on new developments that effect the business that you are in. For builders, there are many new developments and innovations to consider in your new projects.
One of the biggest trends in the last couple of years is in the television industry. The world has gone high definition! It should come as no surprise that satellite television carries more high definition programming than cable TV (63 versus 21 channels). It’s a copper wire versus a massive bandwidth available through the airwaves. High definition programming uses a considerable amount more bandwidth, which plays strongly towards the strengths of satellite television. We are noticing many builders are very much ahead of the technology curve, and are making sure their new projects are wired with satellite television in mind. Others, however, are still lagging behind and are still only putting in very basic television wiring into their projects. In particular, some builders are simply dumping wires for satellite television into attics of their new homes, with no panel box on the outside to access these wires!
